Ella Mitchell

2025 Newman Family Scholarship Recipients

My name is Ella Mitchell, and I am a rising senior majoring in International Studies with
certificates in Public Policy and African Studies. I value the International Studies major because
of its interdisciplinary structure, which has helped me build foundations in foreign policy,
economics, language, and culture.

My professors have prepared me to approach complex global challenges with a critical lens. Last
year, I participated in the Wisconsin in Washington program and interned in the Office of Senator
Amy Klobuchar. Working on the Senator’s foreign policy portfolio sparked my interest in
international development and global food security, and I have integrated this focus into my
coursework.

This summer, I will be studying in Ghana with the UW Food Security, Community Nutrition,
and Public Health in Ghana program. I look forward to learning about how food security
programs are implemented and how international organizations operate first-hand. When I return
to campus in the fall, I am excited to begin my accelerated Master of International Public Affairs
program through the La Follette School of Public Affairs.

I am so grateful to the Newman family for their support of women in the International Studies
major, and I am honored to join the incredible cohort of Newman alumni.
