Internship & Scholarship Opportunities

We encourage students to work with the Intern Abroad Program at UW–Madison to explore internship possibilities both domestically and while they are abroad. You can view international internship opportunities and schedule to meet with an Intern Abroad advisor through their website.
Internship opportunities allow students to: apply knowledge they have learned in the classroom, develop real world skills, gain valuable experiences, and build a portfolio that supports their post-graduation career path. IS Major students are encouraged to pursue internship opportunities to get a feel for what field may or may not interest them. Internships offer a great opportunity to work in a variety of fields in order to see if a professional job in that field is something they would like to pursue further. Students who gain experience through internships have an easier time approaching the job market because they have had exposure to the real working conditions of their chosen profession.
Students can also explore the resources at Successworks, the career services office within the College of Letters and Science, and Handshake. IS Majors can also apply to the Wisconsin in Washington, DC program administered through the study abraod office that includes academic coursework and an internship component.
The Newman Family Scholarship for International Studies has been established to benefit International Studies majors who strive to promote understanding of different cultures in the service of the greater good.
Lynne Newman is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin (BA ’67). Her Spanish major prepared her for a full life that has included travel all over the world. Exposure to a variety of cultures has increased her awareness of the need to promote understanding of different cultures. She believes that this understanding can lead to solving some of our global challenges including reducing armed conflict and promoting literacy and family planning for women. She and her husband Jim established the Newman Family Scholarship to benefit students majoring in International Studies within the College of Letters & Science.
