2026 Newman Family Internship Award Recipient

Tony Jing

My name is Tony Jing, a rising senior studying International Studies on the Global Security Track with majors in Political Science and History. Coming from Indianapolis, Indiana, I have lived across three different countries in Asia (China, Thailand, South Korea) before settling in the U.S. at age 7. I am particularly passionate about foreign policy and security matters in East Asia and Eastern Europe, with a focus on China and Russia.

Since the beginning of this Spring semester, I’ve had the privilege of interning with Hala Systems, a company providing support on the application of advanced technology (remote sensing, artificial intelligence) for non-profit organizations, foreign ministries of various states, and international institutions. In this internship, I am researching how remote sensing and AI technologies are being used by militaries and organizations in conflict zones, and the consequent responsibility that comes with these implications. Using the South China Sea maritime conflicts and the Russian invasion of Ukraine as case studies, I am examining systems implemented by the PLA, such as the Underwater Great Wall, and AI interpretation of satellite imagery data as employed by both Russian and Ukrainian armed forces. This internship has allowed me to dive into deeper subjects with my regional interests while cultivating my language abilities and previous research experiences.

The support of the Newman Family has been critical to my internship experience as it eased the financial burden of my family, and I am filled with profound gratitude regarding the contribution that the Newman Family has made towards my professional development. Undoubtedly, the skills from this internship will contribute to my professional ambitions as I aspire to a think tank, research-oriented career on Russian and Chinese politics.
