Claudia Schwiesow
2024 Newman Family Scholarship Recipient
My name is Claudia Schwiesow, and I am a Junior studying International Studies and Latin American, Caribbean & Iberian Studies (LACIS). This past summer I had the opportunity to volunteer with the Immigrant Justice Clinic, affirming my interest in advocating for human rights. I am currently pursuing an internship with a non-profit out of Washington DC through the Wisconsin in Washington program called Liberty’s Promise. It supports youth immigrants in the DMV area, offering me more insight into the immigrant experience in the Unites States. I occasionally get to use my Spanish skills which is incredibly rewarding!
I currently have my eyes peeled for post-grad opportunities. Many pique my interest, however, learning additional languages, working within the international community, and practicing respectful communication to bridge different cultures, especially in a governmental setting seem to be the key themes for my future. Specifically, the ideas of working as a foreign service officer or at an embassy speak to me! Giving individuals and communities hope for connectedness and purpose are what motivate me.
Outside of career aspirations, I adore dancing and music and plan on pursuing more performance and collaborative opportunities. It is freeing to know that I can pursue both passions of mine, performance arts and international affairs!
